Film Poster Comparisons

Film posters that reference, parody or borrow from other films:

The tagline A Different Set Of Jaws, used on this poster for The Rocky Horror Picture Show, was a reference to Jaws which was released in the same year.

This Fanboys poster is a parody of the poster for The 40-Year-Old Virgin, with a Darth Vader helmet replacing Steve Carell's head.

This poster for American Teen is almost identical to The Breakfast Club poster, highlighting the similarities between the documentary and the film.

A Roaring Rampage Of Revenge

If a woman's place is in the kitchen, the dishes these women are preparing must be ones that are best served cold (SPOILERS within):
• Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan) sought bloody revenge after Warren Meers (Adam Busch) shot and killed her girlfriend Tara Maclay (Amber Benson) in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She got it too when she became Dark Willow and a showdown in the woods resulted in Warren being tortured and flayed alive.
• Beatrix Kiddo aka The Bride (Uma Thurman) awoke from a coma seeking vengeance after being shot and left for dead by the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad on her wedding day four years earlier in Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2.
• Hayley Stark (Ellen Page) proved she wasn't as innocent as she seemed when she turned the tables on paedophile Jeff Kohlver (Patrick Wilson) after striking up an online friendship with him in Hard Candy.
• The men who tried to take advantage of Dawn O'Keefe (Jess Weixler) in Teeth were taught a lesson they'd never forget after an intimate encounter with Dawn left them physically altered and with decidedly more room in their trousers!
• Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) used her telekinetic powers to extract revenge on the classmates who bullied her when a practical joke at the prom left her humiliated and covered in pig's blood in Carrie.

Guys And Dolls

Boy meets girl doll:

Lars Lindstrom (Ryan Gosling) fell for Bianca, a life-sized doll he ordered through the Internet in Lars and the Real Girl.

Kenneth Winslow (Desmond Harrington) ended up in a bizarre love triangle with Lisa Bellmer (Melissa Sagemiller) and a custom-crafted silicone doll named Nikki in Love Object.

Jerry Espenson (Christian Clemenson) had a relationship with Patty, a life-sized sex doll in Boston Legal. He later began a real relationship with Leigh Swift (Mary Gross), an objectaphile who subsequently left Jerry for an iPhone!

Jake Train (Alex House) developed romantic fantasies around Tani, a Barbie-like doll owned by his younger sister in The Safety of Objects.

Get Your Geek On

Geektastic characters from film and TV:
• The Geek aka Farmer Ted (Anthony Michael Hall) not only bagged the prom queen but also Samantha Baker’s (Molly Ringwald) underpants in Sixteen Candles. Anthony Michael Hall also played Brian Johnson in The Breakfast Club and Gary Wallace in Weird Science, making him the geek of choice in 80s teen films.
• Augie Farks (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) was a Live Action Role-Play loving geek in Role Models. Christopher Mintz-Plasse also played über-geek Fogell aka McLovin in Superbad.
• Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan) was a shy computer geek, turned powerful witch in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, later shedding her geeky persona (as well as Warren’s skin!) as Dark Willow. Alyson Hannigan also played band geek Michelle Flaherty in the American Pie films.
• Paul Pfeiffer (Josh Saviano) was Kevin Arnold's (Fred Savage) spectacle wearing, allergy suffering best friend in The Wonder Years. Internet rumours that Josh Saviano grew up to be shock rocker Marilyn Manson were (unfortunately) untrue.
Star Wars fan Sam Weir (John Francis Daley), "comic genius" Neal Schweiber (Samm Levine), and Dallas fanatic Bill Haverchuck (Martin Starr) were the socially challenged geeks of the title in Freaks and Geeks.

Five Signs You're Watching A Bad Horror Film

1. The critic's quote is from an audience member, rather than an actual film critic.
2. It's the sequel, or the sequel to a sequel etc in a franchise that just won't die (much like the villain in it).
3. It's an American remake of an Asian horror film.
4. It relies heavily on (bad) CGI.
5. The film causes unintentional laughter, rather than actual scares.

1. It's directed by Jamie Babbit, who also directed Itty Bitty Titty Committee.
2. Jamie Babbit wrote the story too, while screenwriter Brian Wayne Peterson wrote the script.
3. The costume and production design is great (pinks and blues are used to reflect the themes of the story etc).
4. The soundtrack, including "Chick Habit" by April March and "Glass Vase Cello Case" by Tattle Tale, is also great.
5. It's "A comedy of sexual disorientation"!

"Based On True Events"

I want to see this film based on the poster, but not because it says it's based on true events because I seriously doubt that the events that happened in reality are anything like what will be depicted in the film. It's probably about as "true" as The Strangers was.

According to the IMDb, The Strangers was partially based on an incident that occurred during director Bryan Bertino's childhood. A stranger came to his door in the middle of the night asking for someone who wasn't there, and then left. He later found out several homes in his neighbourhood had been broken into that night. The film was advertised as being inspired by true events, giving many people the impression that the events that occurred in the film had actually happened.
